Aave DeFi Recovery: $300 Million Pledged After Kelp DAO Hack (2026)

In the decentralized finance (DeFi) space, a remarkable display of unity and collaboration has emerged following the Kelp DAO exploit, which caused significant losses for Aave users. This coordinated effort, dubbed 'DeFi United', has raised an impressive $303 million in commitments, showcasing the industry's commitment to supporting users and restoring market stability. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and created risk across Aave's lending positions, has prompted a swift and extensive response from industry leaders.

One of the key players in this recovery effort is Aave itself. The DAO has proposed allocating up to 250,000 ETH, while Founder Stani Kulechov has pledged 5,000 ETH personally. This commitment is supported by contributions from within Aave's ecosystem, including Emilio Frangella (500 ETH), BGD Labs (250 ETH), and KPK's Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano (100 ETH). These contributions demonstrate a sense of shared responsibility and a desire to mitigate the impact of the exploit.

However, the response has extended beyond Aave, with industry leaders reaching out to coordinate a broader solution. Consensys, alongside its founder Joseph Lubin, has committed up to 30,000 ETH, emphasizing the importance of ecosystem-wide collaboration. This commitment is further bolstered by smaller contributions from Lido, EtherFi, Mantle, and Compound, each offering their support in various forms, such as stETH, ETH, and credit facilities.

The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, Ink Foundation, and Tyro also contributing. These contributions highlight the diverse nature of the DeFi community and its willingness to come together during challenging times. The varying approaches to support, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, showcase the industry's adaptability and commitment to risk management.

Aave Labs has also proposed releasing approximately 30,765.67 ETH from the network's Security Council to the coordinated remediation effort, aiming to restore rsETH's backing and make affected holders whole. This proposal, subject to governance approval, underscores the industry's proactive approach to addressing the exploit's impact.

The breadth of participation in DeFi United is a testament to the industry's resilience and ability to collaborate. Despite the exploit's significant impact, the collective effort to recover and strengthen the DeFi infrastructure is a positive sign for the future of decentralized finance. As the recovery process continues, the industry's commitment to user protection and market stability remains a guiding principle, ensuring a more robust and secure DeFi ecosystem.
